Urban Horticulture Event Kicks Off in Bremen on June 2, Focusing on the Concept "Edible City"

The city of Bremen is preparing for the annual 'Bremen Week of Gardens,' an event that highlights the variety of home and small gardens, parks, and cultivated wasteland across the city. This year's theme, 'Edible City,' will run from June 2nd to June 9th, promising a week filled with edible delights, community gardens, and garden exploration.

During this week, 14 community gardens from all over Bremen will be presenting themselves and their work. Among these are young projects like the Waldgarten e.V. and the Gemeinschaftsgarten Gröpelingen, as well as established projects like 'Ab geht die Lucie' or the Fleetgarten in Walle.

One of the highlights of the week is the organic self-sufficiency garden of Claudia and Holger Barho, which will be opening its 2,000 square meter space in the Kleingartenverein Walle. Environmental Senator Kathrin Moosdorf will be a guest at this garden on June 2nd. Visitors can discover various edible delights such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, edible wild plants, and food sources for local wildlife.

Two Waldgardens are being created in the Waller Feldmark between Pirolweg and Brunnenweg and on a former horse pasture at Hagenweg. These gardens test a natural and long-term form of permaculture and community (small) gardening.

Fleetgarten, a self-harvesting project of the SozialÖkologie association in Bremen Walle, is another interesting participant. Interested parties can rent a small plot of land for a season.

Children are not left out of the fun, with a nature experience rally offered by Doris Petersson.

The 'Bremen Week of Gardens' features 113 program points at 57 different locations throughout Bremen. Four greenhouses, several raised beds, and a tool shed have been created in the garden at Ringelblumenweg 12-14. Further ideas for this garden include a garden kitchen and a green space for joint actions.

The complete program for the 'Bremen Week of Gardens' is available online at www.umwelt.bremen.de/alias/woche-des-gartens and as a program brochure at various locations throughout Bremen. Engaged people started designing a garden at Ringelblumenweg 12-14 in 2023.

A total of 24 private gardens are opening their doors to visitors, providing a unique opportunity to learn from private garden owners like Iris Bryson, who finds it beautiful to learn something new from visitors.

So, mark your calendars and get ready to explore Bremen's edible city from June 2nd to June 9th!
