In the heart of Central London, White Red Architects have breathed new life into an old warehouse on Rathbone Street, Fitzrovia, converting it into a unique garage and office space. The project, commissioned by Stevens Properties Ltd., is a testament to the blend of history and modernity, as the architects meticulously restored the building while incorporating innovative design elements.
Originally constructed in 1905 as a two-storey car repair garage, the building's owner, Truman Stevens' great-grandson, had a personal connection to the property. The discovery of an old photograph during the design phase revealed the building's past, leading to the decision to partially restore it as a garage.
The restoration process involved careful planning and obtaining the necessary permissions. The architects balanced the preservation of the original architecture with the need for modern functionality. Historical features, such as an original sign that reads 'MAGNETOS' and an ornate archway, have been reinstated and restored.
Innovative materials and sustainable practices were also incorporated. New fabric ducts made from recycled plastic have been installed, reducing the project's embodied carbon. These ducts maintain a high-quality, machine-washable finish.
Modern design elements can be seen throughout the space. The reception's colour palette is inspired by heritage paint cards found on site. Old photos of the building's past are now displayed in the building's stairwell and throughout the office floors, highlighting its history.
The car enters and exits through a dramatic, giant glass garage door. The project also offers cycle storage and shower facilities, reflecting the needs of the modern workplace. Four new planted terraces have been added to the building, including one on the roof, enhancing the space's aesthetic appeal.
The structural engineers for the project were London Structures Lab, and the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services were provided by Lamorbey Associates. The project's contractor was Teamprojects, and the quantity surveyor was Bigham Anderson Partnership.
The restored garage in Fitzrovia now stands as a symbol of the creative and architectural innovation that thrives in Central London. The classic car that is changed every few months only adds to its charm, making it a unique destination in the heart of the city.
