THW Celebrates 75 Years of Service in Bavaria
The Bavarian State Chancellery is hosting a special reception in Munich to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Technisches Hilfswerk (THW), the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief. Established on August 22, 1950, to protect the population from the effects of war and clear up post-war aftermath, the THW has continually adapted to changing global political situations and climate change.
Over the years, the THW has faced numerous challenges, including the tragic train accident in Bad Aibling in 2016, where over 400 THW forces were deployed. The organization has also expanded its competencies to include emergency supply and restoration, as seen in response to Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014.
The THW's focus on climate change measures has proven beneficial, as demonstrated by the countless hours of service performed by volunteers last year during the flood disaster caused by the low pressure system 'Orinoco' in southern Bavaria. Today, around 16,000 volunteers in Bavaria dedicate their free time to protect the population, making the THW an integral part of the region's emergency response system.
In celebration of its 75th anniversary, the THW in Bavaria is honoring its volunteers and partners at a reception hosted by the Bavarian State Chancellery. The event recognizes the organization's resilience, adaptability, and commitment to protecting the population, both at home and abroad, through its international deployments alongside various governmental bodies, international partners, and other civil and humanitarian organizations.
