A Garden Oasis in Lohe-Mennighuessen: A Hidden Gem in OWL
In the heart of Lohe-Mennighuessen, a picturesque town in North Rhine-Westphalia, lies a garden oasis that is a delight for both the eyes and the soul. Known as the "Oasis Old Nursery", this garden has been meticulously crafted over several decades by Mareike Huebner and her family, spanning approximately 6,000 square meters.
The garden is a harmonious blend of various gardens: the perennial garden, the vegetable garden, and the arboretum. The perennial garden, lovingly designed and decorated by Mareike, boasts more than 50 varieties of roses and numerous other plants. It offers several seating areas for garden enjoyment, such as a protected seating area under tall trees and a covered bench at the southern property boundary.

Mareike also offers bouquets and wreaths made from these flowers, sometimes including dried flowers, for sale in a small self-service cabin.
The former nursery has been transformed into an arboretum, featuring a variety of special species of trees, conifers, and roses. Notable trees in the arboretum include the Handkerchief tree, mulberry tree, linden, chestnuts, oaks, and a birch with rare red leaves. Mareike's son Benedikt has laid out a vegetable garden that supplies the entire family.
Mareike's passion for gardening runs deep, as she has recently trained as a fruit tree caretaker, following in the footsteps of her grandfather Siegfried Huebner. Siegfried nurtured and cared for the special species on the nursery grounds until his death three years ago. Mareike's son Tobias, daughter Carmen, and granddaughter Judith Gladow all share the family's gardening passion.
The garden also promotes biodiversity by leaving islands of untouched lawn and providing native plants for insects to feed on. This commitment to nature extends to Mareike's commitment to the Slow Flower movement, which promotes growing local cut flowers sustainably and without pesticides.
In recognition of its beauty and charm, the "Oasis Old Nursery" has been selected as one of the 14 most exciting gardens for a competition to find the "most beautiful garden in OWL". Online voting will be possible on the digital theme page in the first week of September.
