Borna Bus Driver's Four-Decade Long Mission to Care for Injured Storks
Jörg Spörl, a bus driver from the town of Borna in Germany, has dedicated the past 40 years to an extraordinary hobby – caring for injured and orphaned white storks.
Over the course of four decades, Spörl has hand-reared over 100 storks, providing them with the care and nurturing they need to survive. His dedication to these majestic birds has earned him the title of stork coordinator for the Geithain region in the Leipzig district.
Each day, Spörl prepares around half a dozen young storks for release and their southward migration by feeding them approximately 500-700 grams of food, consisting of mice and chicks sourced from a nearby eco-station. As the storks near release, he gradually reduces their food intake to wean them off and encourage them to start foraging on their own.
Spörl's care for storks is not limited to his role as a bus driver in Altenburg, Thuringia. In addition to driving buses, he spends countless hours tending to his feathered friends, ensuring they are ready to survive in the wild.
