News Article: "Media Art is Here" Transforms Karlsruhe into an Open-Air Gallery

Get ready for an unforgettable experience as the city of Karlsruhe hosts the "Media Art is Here" exhibition, a public, free event running from August 14 to September 14, 2025. This innovative showcase of media artworks by local and international artists will explore the intersection of physical and virtual space, shedding light on the influence of digital media on society, identity, and sustainability.

The exhibition, organised by the Karlsruhe cultural office in partnership with the ZKM | Center for Art and Media, is part of the "Kunst | Sommer | Technik" series. It coincides with the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival, inviting visitors to rediscover Karlsruhe through media and light art.

One of the key features of the exhibition is its interactive and immersive artworks, which offer aesthetic experiences alongside new forms of participation accessible to a broad audience. Some highlights include "The Lawn Centrifuge" by Julijonas Urbonas, which disorients the senses by rotating a lawn and offering new perspectives on body and space, and "Treespotting AR", an augmented reality installation that transforms real trees into digital point clouds.

For those interested in exploring the artworks in a guided tour, the UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts Karlsruhe is offering free guided bike tours. These tours, which start at 7 pm on August 28 and September 4, and at 5 pm on September 11, cover around 4 km and last 1.5 to 2 hours. Participants need only their own bike and smartphone (an app download is required for some artworks). Tours start at marked points such as the Karlsruhe Botanical Garden or near the Novotel Karlsruhe City, with limited group sizes of 15. Registration is required via email to [email protected].

The event will transform the streets of Karlsruhe into a colorful experience of light, sound, and digital surprises. The city, as a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts, showcases digital culture that is experimental, everyday, political, and entertaining. The distinctive mark for works will be a large yellow arrow, making it easy for visitors to navigate the exhibition.

The "Media Art is Here" event offers a unique experience where art meets you in unexpected places, making a lasting impression. Don't miss out on this opportunity to engage with cutting-edge media art and rediscover Karlsruhe in a whole new light. For further information and registration, visit www.cityofmediaarts.de.
