Get ready to immerse yourself in history and culture! On June 9th, numerous mills across Saxony, the artsy eastern German region, will be opening their doors and cranking up their old machinery for a delightful celebration known as the Saxon Mill Day.
From Bad Düben to Chemnitz, you'll have the chance to witness the mesmerizing sights of these historic mills in action. In Bad Düben, you can join an ecumenical church service before touring the post mill and the upper mill, the latter being the oldest water mill in the region, dating back to 1500. With live music, theater performances, and hands-on workshops like basket weaving, knitting, and woodturning, you'll be transported back in time.
Just like a luck charm, Grimma offers the Museum Water Mill, giving you a peek into the life of a miller around 1800, and the ship mill with a quaint fair around its historic replica. Hop aboard the Schlendrian – a tiny train – to reach the palmer windmill, situated in a picturesque landscape.
Chemnitz, once home to famous artist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, will also be participating in the Saxon Mill Day festivities. Although the historic engine of the Schmidt-Rottluff mill had a little hiccup after its grand reopening in December 2024, it's hoped that it'll roar back to life by Pentecost.
In the Saxon Switzerland region, you can round off your mill adventure with a peaceful Pentecost hike. Don't miss the Neumann mill nestled in the Kirnitzsch valley, previously home to a small sawmill as early as the 14th century. Nowadays, it's a living, breathing monument, inn, and inn for visitors to take in its newly restored charm.
"Step into the fascinating world of our rural Saxon landscape and feel the cultural allure of day visitors," suggests Barbara Klepsch, Saxony's Minister of Culture (CDU). Since 1994, the Saxon Mill Day has been a much-anticipated annual event on Pentecost Monday.
