Sailors of the traditional German fleet faced a question this year: Can they set sail?
Greif's Restoration Progresses in Stralsund Shipyard
The traditional sailing vessel "Greif," a pride of Greifswald and a sailing school ship, is currently undergoing restoration in the Stralsund shipyard. The project, which began two and a half years ago, is making significant strides, with the production of new superstructures and the progression of rigging work.
Among the new superstructures being produced are a canopy for the protected entrance to the forecastle, a chart house for the rear area, a central deck house, and a lightweight, corrosion-resistant aluminium structure. These new additions are expected to be completed and installed on the sailing ship in the coming weeks.
One of the key milestones achieved so far is the installation of the bowsprit, which will later support the foresails. The foresail mast has also been successfully hoisted and securely anchored on board.
The restoration of the "Greif" is being carried out by an international team, who are working diligently to make the masts seaworthy once again. The total cost of the restoration project is 4.5 million euros, and so far, the city reports that the repairs are within the financial framework.
Upon its return to the water, the "Greif" will be equipped with all necessary systems such as navigation, electricity, heating, sanitation, ventilation, and interior fittings. The University and Hanseatic City's sailing vessel is expected to leave the shipyard hall and return to the Baltic Sea this year.
However, the current status and expected timeline for the completion of the restoration are not explicitly detailed. For precise and updated details on the "Greif's" restoration, it is recommended to consult specialized maritime heritage organizations in Greifswald or the official ship operators directly. The "Greif" has been out of its home port during the restoration period.
The "Greif's" restoration is a testament to the city's commitment to preserving its maritime heritage. Once completed, the historic ship will continue to serve as a valuable educational tool for sailing enthusiasts and visitors alike.
The restored "Greif" will encourage an outdoor-living lifestyle, offering opportunities for people to learn sailing in its home-and-garden setting by the Baltic Sea. Upon its completion, the ship's canopy, chart house, deck house, and aluminium structure will facilitate a comfortable lifestyle for those onboard, fostering a connection with the sea and the maritime environment.
