Revamped Appeal - Designer's Thoughtful Choice of Pink Enhances Comfort in North-Eastern Living Room
In a harmonious blend of old and new, a disjointed living room within a Victorian property has been transformed into a cohesive and functional space that preserves its historical character while catering to modern living. The project, led by designer Filippo Calvagno of Studio Calvagno, aimed to balance functionality with a design-focused, calming atmosphere.
The brief was to transform the front room into a more formal living space for entertaining, while the back room would be a TV room for children. The living room makeover was the first room in the house to be tackled.
The key strategies to achieve cohesion and functionality included respecting and highlighting period features, mixing historic with contemporary furnishings, establishing a strong focal point, using a unified color palette, layering lighting thoughtfully, respecting scale and proportion, creating functional zones, and incorporating textures and materials.
The living room before the transformation was considerably darker and dated, chopped up by two contrasting colours between the front and back rooms. To address this, the pink hues transformed the living room into a cohesive oasis of calm. The curved sofa by Six the Residence is the centerpiece of the living room and faces the snug, ideal for conversation. The understated color palette and soft curves create a quietly luxurious space steeped in tranquillity.
The paint color, Lick's Pink 02, was used for the walls, snug, and built-in cabinets. Filippo Calvagno, inspired by his Sicilian heritage and the client's Middle-Eastern background, chose this colour palette. The colour changes throughout the day, turning into a warm yellow tone when the sun hits it.
Vintage-sourced decorations in the living room have curves that subtly embody the female form. Neutral rugs were used to define each space in the living room while maintaining a continuous flow. The goal was to balance functionality with a design-focused, calming atmosphere in the living room.
This approach aligns with the principles of careful restoration combined with modern interventions that respect the home's story, innovative uses of space to solve awkward layouts without erasing character, and bespoke joinery or cabinetry that mirrors period detail but offers modern practicality.
In summary, focus on celebrating the period features by preserving and highlighting them, use a balanced mix of vintage and contemporary furniture, unify the space with a coherent palette and lighting, and design functional zones that respect the home's unique architecture. This methodology will help create a living room design that is both practical and true to the heritage of a period property.
