The South London Gallery is set to host the "Dwellings" exhibition this weekend, an intriguing project that delves into themes of home, domesticity, and personal spaces through contemporary art.

Curated by Computer Room, a trio comprising Andu Masebo, Charlie Humble-Thomas, and Jesse Butterfield, the exhibition features 22 individuals and studios working in the realm of design. Each artist has been asked to respond to the idea of a bird house, resulting in a diverse showcase of practices, including glass, photography, data, ceramics, wood, and ancestral talismans.

Andu Masebo, a member of Computer Room, collaborated with his uncle, a trained carpenter in Ireland, to create a bird house as part of the exhibition. Some works in the exhibition reflect on personal relationships, such as this collaboration. Charlie from Computer Room, meanwhile, created a bird house for an endangered bird species.

The exhibition serves as an access point for discussions around the relevance and interestingness of design as a lens to examine different areas of life. It aims to bring forth conversations about nature and human interaction, engaging with the subject in a deep and diverse manner.

"Dwellings" might encourage the presence of birds, possibly through planting seeds. The exhibition also explores notions of human interference with animal shelter, changed migratory patterns through climate change, the damage and opportunities of urban habitats, and inherited assumptions about sanctuaries and nests.

Flock Together, a birdwatching group for people of color that has grown into a collective for greater inclusivity in outdoor culture, worked in close consultation on the exhibition.

Ollie Olanipekun, the founder of Flock Together, is one of Wallpaper's Future Icons and spoke about the project. The exhibition is evidence of the rich and restless new generation of designers using design as a tool to interrogate and wrestle with the overwhelming state of flux in which we find ourselves.

For more precise details on the full list of participants or the exhibition’s curatorial framework, consulting South London Gallery’s official website or directly contacting the gallery may be necessary. The results of the exhibition will be on display for just two days in the Orozco Garden and the Clore Studio at South London Gallery, from 31 August to 1 September.
