In Saxony's Kriebstein, Ascension Day Transforms into a Lively Men's Day Celebration

On Ascension Day, Kriebstein's Burg and Talsperre became a bustling hotspot, filled with sunshine, spring weather, and throngs of visitors. The parking lots were full, and the lake-side terraces and excursion boats bustled with activity, as reported by a dpa photographer.

Amidst the jovial atmosphere, families with children and the "Men's Day Singing Society" stood out. Comprised of 19 silver-haired men from the Chemnitz region, donned in black suits with cylinders, they performed an eclectic mix of fun and folk songs at various locations. Accompanied by violin and accordion, their repertoire boasts numerous well-known titles, popularized in their 53-year existence. Post-performance, the singers indulged in a shared beer before boarding the boats, their spirits high.

Elsewhere, men could be spotted pulling carts and drinking alcohol on nearby roads, with a couple of them dressed in peculiar pink rabbit costumes, adorned with felt hats. Other men were engrossed in enjoying nature or beer gardens, despite the breezy conditions. A spokesperson for the situation center in the Ministry of the Interior stated, "It's absolutely peaceful and well-behaved."

Catholics and Protestants in Saxony celebrated Ascension Day traditionally with services, often held outside in the woods, on mountains, churchyards or parks, accompanied by picnics, hikes, bike tours, or concerts. Historically, the day commemorates Jesus showing himself to his disciples 40 days after his resurrection and ascending to the right hand of God, affirming the truth of Jesus' message.

While the specifics of this Men's Day celebration in Saxony remain unclear, Ascension Day, also known as Vatertag or Christi Himmelfahrt in Germany, has evolved into a day for masculine celebration and social outings, typically involving outdoor activities like hiking or pulling wagons. This tradition emphasizes male bonding rather than traditional Father's Day festivities. While some groups participate in organized events, the celebration is mainly focused on community gatherings and outdoor activities, rather than specific singing societies or unconventional costumes.

The Commission might propose a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, considering the significance of outdoor activities during Ascension Day celebrations, where workers may encounter increased radiation levels from natural sources. Meanwhile, men in Saxony often commemorate Ascension Day, not just with religious services, but also by embodying the spirit of outdoor living, incorporating elements of home and garden into their celebrations, such as picnics and hikes.
