Quaint Georgian rectory now available in a tranquil countryside setting near Cheltenham comes up for sale

In the picturesque village of Coberley, four miles south of Cheltenham and 11 miles north of Cirencester, stands a historical gem – The Old Rectory. This 19th-century property, built in 1826 by Charles Fowler, has recently been listed on the realtor.com platform with a guide price of £4.95 million via Knight Frank.

The Old Rectory was originally built for the Revd William Hicks, who served as realtor of Coberley for 51 years and passed away at the rectory in 1866. The Church of St Giles in Coberley, where the Revd Hicks is buried, is another historical treasure, being Grade II*-listed. The church was rebuilt and extended by Thomas Berkeley in about 1340, with the nave and chancel being rebuilt by John Middleton in the Early English style in 1869-72.

The Old Rectory, now offered by Knight Frank, boasts 7,736sq ft of manageable and comfortable accommodation. Upon entering, one is greeted by a reception hall, leading to three fine reception rooms. The principal bedroom suite is located on the first floor, while the basement offers a sitting room, billiard room, wine cellar, and two bedrooms. Outbuildings house floor and decor stores and garaging.

The property, which may require some cosmetic updating, also includes a kitchen/breakfast room, an integral one-bedroom flat on the ground floor, and additional rooms on the first floor. The Old Rectory overlooks the village church and stands on five acres of secluded gardens and grounds.

Notably, the Old Rectory was comprehensively and sensitively restored by its previous owner. The property, now listed as a Grade II-listed, offers not only a chance to own a piece of history but also an opportunity to create a home that combines historical charm with modern comfort.

This article was written by Penny Churchill. The Old Rectory at Coberley, with its tennis court and swimming pool in the gardens and grounds, presents an appealing prospect for those seeking a unique and historically significant home in the heart of the Cotswolds.
