Police station's redevelopment planned for senior housing project
Birchgrove, the UK's leading developer of rental retirement housing, has secured planning permission for a new retirement living community in Chiswick [1]. This development is part of Birchgrove’s broader portfolio aimed at creating high-quality, purpose-built rental homes for older people.
The Chiswick development will offer purpose-built rental housing tailored for retirees, along with communal facilities such as residents' lounges, gyms, and concierge services, as is typical in similar developments nearby. The focus is on creating vibrant, supportive communities for older adults.
While specific details about the Chiswick development’s amenities are limited, Birchgrove’s approach prioritizes quality of living and community engagement within a convenient location.
The retirement community will be established to provide a dedicated space for those who have retired in the Chiswick area. The former police station at 209-211 Chiswick High Road, originally opened in 1972 and sold to Birchgrove in April 2022, will be converted into a 50-unit retirement living community.
The ground-floor space of the retirement living community will be available for local community groups to hire for meetings. Facilities will include a 24-hour concierge service, restaurant, license bar, courtyard garden, and wellness suite. A separate dedicated facilities space will be provided for the police, enabling officers to charge their body-worn cameras, iPads, and radios.
The scheme will contribute £400,000 towards affordable housing in Hounslow. After two public consultations, planning permission has been granted for the conversion of the police station into a retirement living community.
Honor Barratt, chief executive at Birchgrove, expressed gratitude for the support and suggestions from the council and local residents. The development is expected to bring investment in local infrastructure and housing stock, new, well-designed homes for an aging population, and potential creation of jobs during construction and ongoing property management phases.
This can also influence local demographics by attracting older residents who want to downsize yet remain integrated in active urban neighborhoods, potentially boosting local services and commerce. In summary, Birchgrove’s Chiswick retirement living community represents a significant new senior housing project focused on rental living with communal amenities designed for retirees. Its introduction is likely to enhance local housing options for seniors and contribute positively to the social and economic fabric of the Chiswick area [1]. However, precise features or community impact specifics for this particular Chiswick project remain limited in the available information.
