Origin Title: The Authentic Happiness Trailblazer

Smokey Bear, the iconic symbol of wildfire prevention, has been a staple of American pop culture since his creation in 1944. But did you know that the bear we know and love today is quite different from his original form?

Originally depicted so realistically that he scared children, Smokey Bear underwent a transformation in 1949 under the artistic hand of Rudy Wendelin. Wendelin took over the drawing duties for Smokey Bear and gave him a friendlier look, removing his claws, adding eyelashes, and changing his posture to make him walk upright. This change made Smokey Bear more approachable and less frightening, making him a beloved figure across the nation.

The Smokey Bear Collection at the National Agricultural Library (NAL) showcases this transformation and much more. The collection includes posters, comics, original artwork, motion pictures, sound recordings, and other memorabilia that span the decades. Visitors can spot the images of celebrities like Ray Charles, Rod Serling, and Jonathan Winters in Smokey-related materials, as well as trading cards and other collectibles.

One unique aspect of the collection is the Smokey and the Pros sports program, which featured star athletes like Joe Montana in spreading the message of the Smokey Bear campaign. The now-defunct program was a part of the collection and offers a glimpse into the ways in which the campaign evolved over the years.

The Smokey campaign is the longest public advertising campaign that has ever existed in the United States, and its longevity is a point of pride for Sara Lee, the lead librarian for special collections at NAL. The collection is open to the public by appointment, and casual visitors can browse a display featuring collection highlights of Smokey Bear.

Despite his humble beginnings, Smokey Bear has become an enduring symbol of wildfire prevention and a beloved figure in American pop culture. The Smokey Bear Collection at NAL offers a unique opportunity to learn about the history of this iconic figure and the campaign that has kept wildfires at bay for over seven decades. The campaign is still ongoing, and Smokey Bear continues to remind us to "Only you can prevent wildfires."
