Optimistic Outlook for the 2025 Grape Harvest
The Afftal winemakers are in the midst of their annual grape harvest, but this year, time is of the essence. The risk of rot setting in increases with each passing day, as moisture remains a problem due to insect damage and the current weather conditions.
Stefan Steinel, cellar master for the Afftal winemakers, is keeping a close eye on the vineyards. He states that the quantity and quality of the harvest is excellent, despite the weather challenges. The order of the harvest is determined by the sugar content, with Dunkelfelder, traditionally an early variety, being the first to be harvested this year.
The Afftaler harvest the grapes for the Rosé and the base wines for sparkling wine early due to consumer preference for light and fruity wines. The Burgundy varieties, including Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder, and Spätburgunder, are also being harvested.
Egon Metzger, a winemaker and veteran with the Afftal winemakers, expresses satisfaction with the current state of the grapes and foliage. He notes that the weather forecast promises more sun over the vineyards in the region, which is good news for the winemakers.
Sorting begins even before the harvest, with the grape reception at Afftal running smoothly. Tractor after tractor brings in full bins for further processing. Steinel hopes to leave the Riesling for harvest later, around September 22nd, provided there is dry weather. He also hopes that in the first Burgundy phase, they can leave the Riesling alone for a while due to existing capacity considerations in the wine cellar.
In good weather, dense grape varieties can develop noble rot Botrytis, but in wet weather, acetic acid can form, necessitating additional harvesting efforts and losses. Steinel and the Afftal winemakers are hopeful for continued good weather with sunny and warm days and cool nights.
Despite the challenges, the Afftal winemakers are optimistic about this year's harvest. They are confident that they will produce high-quality wines that will delight their customers. The cellar master must keep track of where the grapes are being picked at the right time to ensure a successful outcome, which depends on sun and little moisture.
