Offspring of Giraffes Spotted at Leipzig Zoo
In a heartwarming event at Leipzig Zoo's Kiwara Savanna, Tamika, the resident giraffe, gave birth to a female calf. The birth took place recently, and the calf immediately showed signs of strength and independence.
Following initial signs of labor, the calf was born nearly 6 feet tall and weighed around 100 to 220 pounds. The birth involved the calf dropping about 1.8 meters (6 feet) to the ground, which helped stimulate its breathing and physical readiness.
Moments after birth, Tamika encouraged the calf by licking and nudging it to stand. The calf demonstrated its precocial nature by standing on its own less than two hours after birth. Approximately an hour after standing, the calf attempted its first nursing, a significant milestone in its life.
