Obituary: Nancy Eleanor Spear (1936-2025)

Nancy Eleanor Spear, a beloved member of the Albuquerque community, passed away on July 26, 2025, at her Los Lunas home. Born on July 6, 1936, in Providence, R.I., Nancy spent her later years in New Mexico, where she made a significant impact on the lives of many.

Nancy was married to Winfield Spear for 41 years, and the couple shared a special bond, celebrating their birthdays on June 6 and July 6, both turning 89 this year. Nancy is survived by her husband, Winfield; several family members including half-sister, Lida Black, and half-brother, Richard Haven; son, Peter D. Rail, and grandson, Dr. Benjamin Rail; and many grandnieces and nephews.

Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Walter Haven; mother, Helen Haven; stepmother, Marjorie P. Haven; sister, Lois Bennett, and husband, Frank Bennett.

Nancy was a dedicated member of the Albuquerque Sweet Adelines, where she sang tenor. She was presented with an award for "Exceptional Service in the National Interest" upon her retirement from Sandia National Laboratories.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to several organisations that Nancy held dear. These include Albuquerque Sweet Adelines, Inc., Animal Humane of New Mexico, the World Wildlife Fund, National Wildlife Federation, Defenders of Wildlife, and the National Audubon Society.
