Museum of Natural History and Science in New Mexico undergoes seven-month-long refurbishment

The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science is undergoing a significant renovation, closing its doors on January 23, 2022, and is expected to reopen in the spring of 2026. During the seven-month renovation period, improvements will be made to the exhibition spaces, including enhancements to the Jurassic Hall to reflect scientific advances since its 2004 installation, a new exhibit introducing mammal species, and improvements to the Cretaceous Hall.

The museum's redesign will also include a new entrance, box office, and gift shop, as well as the installation of new skylights and the replacement of the main sewer line with a 4-foot trench dug throughout the museum. A highlight of the renovation is the skylight, which will be designed to spotlight Bella, the Bisti beast, with a protective carport-like structure built for her.

On the museum's last day, guests were offered free admission and had the opportunity to enjoy free planetarium and DynaTheater shows. They also had the chance to add small drawings and notes to the museum's time capsule, which is planned to be buried during the renovation period.

While the museum is closed, those interested in staying updated on the renovation progress and upcoming events can sign up for the museum's free email newsletter. However, it appears that there was an error processing the request for the museum's newsletter signup, and an email has been sent to confirm list signup.

Despite the temporary closure, the museum remains committed to providing an engaging and educational experience for visitors. The renovation is aimed at enhancing the visitor experience and ensuring the museum remains a destination for learning and discovery for years to come.
