Medieval fair sparks bustling four-day affair in Ritterburg

In the heart of Lower Austria's Melk district lies Plankenstein Castle, a medieval stronghold steeped in history and culture. Abandoned for several decades, the castle is now regaining its lost splendor under the dedicated restoration efforts of owner Erich Podstatny.

For Podstatny, the revitalization and operation of the castle stand as a lifelong aspiration. As part of this mission, Plankenstein Castle plays host to an annual medieval festival, which this year runs from the Feast Day Thursday to Sunday. This spectacular event promises music, dancing, feasting, and even thrilling jousting displays.

Performers such as "The Rogues" and "The Figgy Knaves" will fill the castle's courtyards, gardens, and tournament field with the sounds of medieval tunes, harmonizing with the enchanting performances of the Fahima Witches in the bustling marketplaces.

While the festival is a key highlight, the castle also demonstrates an impressive range of other entertainments. Expect to see knights, jugglers, artists, fire-eaters, and archers, among others, bringing the spirit of a medieval realm to life.

The accommodations, including the castle's tavern, knight's rooms, and suites, are currently booked solid, indicating a high level of interest in the festival and the castle's ongoing restoration. Erich Podstatny acquired the castle in 2010 from Peter Trimbacher and has since been transforming it into a museum-like experience.

Plankenstein Castle, whose origins date back to the 12th century, offers much more than a glimpse into the past. With its meticulous restoration, engaging festivities, and immersive exhibits, it stands as a captivating testament to Austria's rich history and culture. Visitors can experience both the castle's historic grandeur and a taste of medieval life during the annual festival, making it an essential destination for anyone interested in history and culture alike.

Economic and social policy at Plankenstein Castle revolves around preserving its historical integrity while providing an immersive medieval experience for visitors. This is evident in the home-and-garden spaces, meticulously restored to celebrate Austria's past, and the annual festival that transforms the castle into a bustling medieval marketplace.
