Manga and Comic Design: "Koma-Wari" Approach for Strip Arrangement

In an exciting development for manga enthusiasts across North America, the renowned 'This is MANGA - the Art of NAOKI URASAWA' exhibition is set to debut. The exhibition, which will run from January 23 to March 28, will feature the work of internationally acclaimed Japanese artist, Naoki Urasawa.

Urasawa, known for his dynamic storytelling and transcendent artistic skill, has selected stories from seven of his major works to be highlighted. These include YAWARA!, MONSTER, 20th Century Boys, PLUTO, BILLY BAT, MASTER KEATON ReMASTER, and MUJIRUSHI.

For those interested in learning from the master, workshops accompanying the exhibition offer a unique opportunity. Led by workshop instructor MinoMiyabi, these sessions will provide guests with the chance to nurture their drawing skills and connect with the manga art form. The $10 fee for the workshops includes drawing material.

MinoMiyabi, a regular speaker at annual workshops on character design and manga drawing at Anime EXPO (Los Angeles) and Comic-Con International (San Diego), is a Los Angeles-based animator and illustrator with an MFA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He is currently continuing his freelance work with a number of his own original projects in development.

MinoMiyabi's workshops are recommended for those aged 15 and above, and minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Registration for the workshops has closed, but attendees can still look forward to an immersive experience in the world of manga.

The retrospective exhibition will showcase over 400 original drawings and storyboards from Urasawa's works, offering a rare glimpse into the creative process of one of the most influential manga artists of our time.

Urasawa's unique storytelling technique, known as Koma-wari, will be on full display. This method, which involves carefully arranging panels to guide the reader's eye flow and emphasize narrative timing, is a crucial aspect of manga storytelling. Koma-wari controls the unfolding of scenes, pace, and emotion, directing how smoothly the story is followed, influencing the rhythm, and enhancing emotional impact.

As you navigate through the exhibition, you'll witness how Urasawa uses panel layout to control the sequence and clarity of story events, pace, and emotion. You'll see how large panels or spread-out layouts slow the reader down, emphasizing important moments or dramatic beats, while smaller, tightly packed panels speed up action or quick exchanges, creating momentum. You'll also observe how panel size and arrangement highlight emotional reactions or tension.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to delve into the world of manga and learn from one of the best. So, mark your calendars and get ready for an unforgettable journey into the art of NAOKI URASAWA.
