Longest Chain of Chewing Gum Packaging: An Extensive Condensation of Empty Gum Wrappers Across the Globe
Record-breaking Bubble Gum Wrapper Chain
Gary Duschl, a retiree living in Virginia, United States, has held the Guinness World Record for creating the longest bubble gum wrapper chain since 1994. Sparked by a childhood hobby in Canada, Duschl's fascination with crafting paper chains from gum wrappers has earned him a place in history.
At the tender age of 14, Duschl began his unusual pastime after observing older children constructing intricate chains on the playground. His initial success came in the form of winning school competitions, first capturing the title of longest chain in his class, and later in the entire school.
Today, Duschl's world record chain measures an astonishing 32,555.68 meters (106,810 feet). Duschl recalls the accidental discovery of his unusual achievement when he and his wife visited the Ripley's Museum in Ontario in 1992. There, they saw a massive bubble gum wrapper chain hanging from the ceiling. Inspired, Duschl set his sights on breaking the record set by the then holder, with a chain length of 2.25 kilometers (1.4 miles). In 1996, he achieved his goal, measuring his chain at 3.68 kilometers (2.29 miles), surpassing the previous record.
While no one has come close to surpassing Duschl's record, he continues to stretch and measure his chain every five years to ensure its accuracy. Recent measurements put his chain at 37.4 kilometers (23.226 miles), a remarkable feat even for the competitive Duschl.
Duschl's accomplishment has attracted attention on TikTok, where a viral video showcasing his creation garnered widespread acclaim. Yet, Duschl remains driven, eyeing the ultimate goal of having a chain as long as a marathon (42 kilometers or 26.2 miles). He is now just three more miles away from achieving this milestone, following which, he plans to extend his chain to 45 kilometers (28 miles) - the length of the beach in Virginia, where he has resided with his wife since 2002.
