Local authorities increasingly opt for bus travel as a primary mode of transportation
Burgenlandkreis to Launch On-Demand Bus System in August 2025
In a move to revolutionise public transportation, the Burgenlandkreis district in Germany will introduce an on-demand bus system starting from August 12, 2025. This innovative system aims to provide more flexible and efficient service in rural and less densely populated areas where traditional bus lines may be less frequent or cost-effective.
The on-demand bus system will operate differently from conventional fixed-route buses, allowing passengers to request rides within the service area at their convenience. This approach contrasts with traditional bus operations that follow predefined routes and timetables, potentially increasing convenience and reducing empty runs.
While the specific details of the service, such as booking methods, fleet size, or coverage zones, are yet to be fully disclosed, this pilot reflects a trend of digitalising and optimising public transit to be more user-responsive and potentially integrate with wider transport networks.
The initial locations for the test in Burgenlandkreis will be some areas in the associations of municipalities An der Finne and Unstruttal. Passengers will need to register in advance for on-demand buses, either by phone or app, and observe a certain lead time when booking.
In other districts of Germany, similar on-demand bus systems have already been implemented. For instance, the Mansfeld-Südharz district has replaced poorly utilised bus lines with an on-demand bus system called "MSH_Mobil". In Salzwedel and Gardelegen, a flexible demand-responsive bus system without fixed schedules is in operation. In Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, a combination of fixed routes and fixed-schedule demand-responsive buses is operated in rural areas.
Passengers using the on-demand bus "MSH_Mobil" in Mansfeld-Südharz need to use the "mo.pla" app. In the Burgenlandkreis system, tickets like the Germany ticket are usually accepted, but supplements may be due per trip or kilometer.
The ultimate goal of the Burgenlandkreis on-demand bus system is to create a bus service that meets the needs of the people, contributing to the broader digital transformation and mobility trends aimed at improving rural public transit, reducing emissions, and enhancing passenger convenience.
