Literary escapade unfolds at the urban library this season

Get ready to attend a literary treat in Dormagen!

Prepare your calendars, folks! The lively city of Dormagen is diving into the cross-border festival known as "Literary Summer." Last year, we had the pleasure of bestselling author Caroline Wahl gracing our libraries, and this year, we've got another ace up our sleeve. On Monday, July 22, at 7 PM sharp, Dutch author Gerbrand Bakker will be gracing our presence, reading excerpts from his novel "The Barber's Son."

This grand event is just one piece of the 60-event puzzle, with 30 authors involved across 21 cities along the Rhine and Meuse rivers.

Gerbrand Bakker, born in 1962 in Wieringerwaard, North Holland, is an accomplished author, columnist, and gardener. His books have been translated into over 20 languages and have won numerous awards. "The Barber's Son" is a gripping tale about Simon, a third-generation barber, who, after peeking into his father's mysterious past, decides to unravel the truth of his father's presumed death in a plane crash.

Tickets for Gerbrand's session will cost you €10, or just €5 for the reduced price. If you're a literary enthusiast and want to attend multiple events during the festival, you can opt for the festival pass priced at €35 (reduced €20), with an additional €1 for each event you attend. As for Gerbrand Bakker, he's no stranger to the literary world. He won the prestigious International Dublin Literary Award in 2010 for his novel "The Twin"[1][5]. His writing often delves into themes of isolation, family dynamics, and the human condition, and his novels are characterized by a contemplative, introspective style that explores the intricacies of human relationships and the inner worlds of his characters.

He's no stranger to literary events either, having been part of a panel at the International Literature Festival Dublin in 2025 discussing his latest works[3][4]. His participation in the "Literary Summer" festival in Dormagen is yet another testament to his commitment to engaging with readers and writers from different cultures and languages.
