Lecture on Sea Writer: Writer to Explore Monstrous, Unruly Waves and the Thrill-seekers who Embrace Them

On Thursday, November 17, acclaimed journalist and author Susan Casey will be delivering a lecture titled "THE WAVE" at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, California. The event, which takes place from 6:30-8 p.m., will delve into the science, power, and human fascination with giant ocean waves.

Known for her exploration of ocean-related topics, Casey's book, The Wave, offers an in-depth look at these formidable natural occurrences. The book tells the story of rogue waves, the surfers who seek them out, and the science behind these monstrous waves. Towering over 60 feet, these ocean monsters are awe-inspiring and dangerous, a subject that Casey will no doubt touch upon during her lecture.

During the event, Casey will share stories from her journey following extreme surfer Laird Hamilton and his crew on the hunt for gargantuan waves. She will also discuss the life and death stakes of surfing these giant waves, as well as scientists' urgent efforts to understand the destructive powers of waves, including the 2004 Pacific tsunami and the 1,740-foot-wave that leveled part of the Alaskan coast.

The interactive museum at Birch Aquarium showcases research discoveries by Scripps scientists on climate, Earth, and ocean science. Attendees can expect a discussion on the science behind these mammoth waves, as well as the environmental and emotional aspects connected to the ocean.

For those interested, books will be available for purchase or can be pre-purchased at the aquarium Gift Shop. Following the presentation, there will be a booksigning.

The aquarium, located at 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla, Calif., can be reached by exiting Interstate 5 at La Jolla Village Drive and heading west one mile, then left on Expedition Way. The event costs $5, and RSVP can be done at 858-534-5771 or online.

Birch Aquarium, with an annual attendance of more than 415,000, including 45,000 school children, offers three-hour courtesy parking. The aquarium features more than 60 habitats of fish and invertebrates from the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest to the tropical waters of Mexico and the Caribbean.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn about the fascinating world of giant ocean waves from an expert in the field. Join Susan Casey at the Birch Aquarium on November 17 for an unforgettable evening of science, adventure, and oceanic exploration.
