Island Nation of Sri Lanka, Neighboring India
=============================================================================
In the heart of Bengaluru, nestled on a verdant slope in the Varthur neighbourhood, a unique home has been crafted by Bodhi Design Studio. This project, a collaborative effort with homeowners Shinny and Sunil, showcases a design philosophy that prioritises harmony with the environment and a seamless integration of the home's design elements with the owners' lifestyle.
The home, spanning over 5,523 square feet, is situated on a 4,300 square foot east-facing plot that gently tilts north. The design, influenced by the natural features of the slope and the orientation of the plot, prioritises long views over loud statements.
Shinny and Sunil, a couple with Kerala roots, have a deep appreciation for natural elements and the flow of space. Their global eyes and deeply intuitive sense of space have guided the design process, ensuring that the home is not just a structure, but a living, breathing space that harmonises with its surroundings.
The design ethos favours flow over formality. Rather than prioritising size, the focus is on harmonising with the surrounding environment. The home's design aims to let the trees frame the walls, the slope guide the flow, and the sun shape the soul of the home, rather than building big.
Amirah Ahamed, Principal Architect at Bodhi Design Studio, brought a grounded design ethos to the project. Her approach was to create custom-made furniture, drapery, and consultation services that complement the lifestyle, space, and aesthetics of the home. This approach integrates the design deeply with the occupants' way of living, rather than imposing an external style.
Indian craft is layered into the design of the home, and Sri Lankan tropical modernism influences the design. The result is a home that is both aesthetically pleasing and deeply connected to its roots. The design does not aim for grand statements but rather for a grounded aesthetic that reflects the homeowners' preferences.
In summary, Bodhi Design Studio's design philosophy in this project exemplifies a personalised, integrative approach that prioritises custom craftsmanship and a seamless blend between design elements and the user’s lifestyle in Bengaluru. This approach, which values bespoke, site-specific design that balances functionality and aesthetics, has resulted in a home that is not just a structure, but a testament to the harmony between design, nature, and lifestyle.
