Iowa State Fair Gardening Contests Kick Off
Get ready, green thumbs! The Iowa State Fair is set to host a variety of gardening contests from August 7 to August 16. Here's a rundown of the exciting events you can expect this year.
The fair begins with the Show Off Your Talent Flower Show on August 7, featuring classes 1-6. On the same day, the Plant Identification Contest (Division 220, Class 503) and the Weed Identification Contest take place.
The following day, August 8, the Fruit Identification Contest and the Iowa State Fair's Plant Identification Contest (Division 220, Class 503) are scheduled. The Best Tasting Tomato Contest is also on this day.
On August 9, the Rose Show (Division 204) and the Show Off Your Talent Flower Show (Division 201, Classes 7-12) take place. The Hosta Leaf Show (Division 205) and the Dahlia Show (Division 208) are scheduled for August 10 and 16, respectively.
The Fruit, Vegetable and Nut Identification Contest is on August 13, along with the Gladiolus Show (Division 207), Fairy Gardens (Division 220, Class 514), and Iowa Floral Design (Division 220, Class 512). The Flower Identification Contest (Division 220, Class 507) is scheduled for August 12, and the Guess How Many Rose Petals (Division 220, Class 510) contest takes place on August 14.
The Succulent Garden (Division 220, Class 515) and the Iowa Flowers (Division 220, Class 511) happen on August 15. The Iowa State Fair's Floral Design (Division 220, Class 512) and the Pella Wonderland (Division 220, Class 504) are also scheduled for this day.
The Agricultural and Horticultural Crops Judging Schedule is spread across August 6 to 9. The Potted Plants Show (Division 206) and the Junior and Intermediate Shows (Divisions 202-203) take place on August 11.
Remember, entries for various gardening categories at the Iowa State Fair are due on July 1st. To enter, one must receive an entry tag after submission. Contests marked with an asterisk in the schedule do not require advanced registration.
