Hack Your Garden: DIY Watermelon Planter with a Stylish Cement and Gypsum Makeover

Want to make your garden pop? Look no further! This awesome step-by-step guide transforms ordinary watermelons into chic planters that'll turn heads in any outdoor space.

Here's what you'll need for this genius project:

  • Two watermelons, one larger and one smaller
  • Cement, sand, and gypsum for the base and coating
  • Construction adhesive
  • Soil, small pebbles for drainage, and paint (Gold or silver tones)

First things first, select a clean, mess-free workspace, like a garage or outdoors.

The fun starts with creating a robust base. Pour a mixture of cement and sand onto the workspace, forming a depression for the smaller watermelon. Carefully carve out the larger watermelon from the top, reserving the flesh for later use as an organic fertilizer.

Next, prepare a special mixture using a 3:1:1 ratio of cement, gypsum, and water. Ensure the consistency is fluid enough for easy pouring but not too runny. After pouring, tap the watermelon to help the mixture distribute evenly.

Using remaining cement-gypsum mixture and added gypsum, create decorative nubs to cover the entire watermelon surface. Apply construction adhesive and adjust the position using a trowel until the cement has fully set.

Once dry, remove the watermelon from the cement shell, trim away excess rind, and carve the inner watermelon to the desired height. Line the planter with drainage pebbles, then combine crushed watermelon flesh with soil for extra plant nourishment.

Finally, paint the lower part of the planter in gold or silver tones, while creating natural watermelon-inspired stripes on the top. Did you know? These homemade flower beds can last for 5-7 years with proper care, serving as both beautiful and practical garden elements.
