Holiday season in Germany demands ubiquitous availability of it
While soaking up the sun or exploring new destinations, many German vacationers find comfort in keeping up with their favourite German television shows. Approximately 56% of German travelers continue to watch German television during their vacations, and the most common locations for this are hotels and vacation homes, accounting for around 43% of viewers.
When it comes to accessing German TV content abroad, two main methods stand out. Firstly, the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) is prevalent among German travelers. VPNs enable users to connect to servers in Germany, thereby obtaining a German IP address and bypassing geo-restrictions on popular German TV platforms such as ARD, ProSieben, ZDF, and more. Notable VPNs for this purpose include Surfshark, NordVPN, and IPVanish, which are known for their ability to reliably unblock German streaming services while providing secure connections [1][3][5].
Secondly, streaming services with German content are becoming increasingly popular. Services like Zattoo offer live TV streaming with over 200 TV channels, including German stations, and are accessible on multiple devices with features such as live pause and video-on-demand. Zattoo's popularity stems from its availability within the EU and mobile usage support, making it convenient for Germans traveling within Europe [4].
Classical reception methods like satellite or DVB-T2 are used less frequently. Instead, the most popular devices for watching German television on vacation are televisions (47%), smartphones (around 37%), and tablets (32%). Over 46% of respondents rate access to German television or streaming offers as important or very important, with only 12% considering it unimportant.
Interestingly, campers and cruise vacationers are significantly less represented, making up just 9% of those who watch German television. It's worth noting that 90% of German vacationers who watch German television stay in classic accommodations like hotels or vacation apartments.
In conclusion, for German vacationers, watching TV remains a fixed part of daily life, even during vacation time. Whether it's through VPNs or streaming services, they find ways to stay connected to their favourite German shows while exploring new horizons.
