High-end Accommodation: Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park
The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel in London, a celebrated five-star establishment, has undergone a multi-million pound renovation project from 2017 to 2018. This extensive makeover, led by architects Purcell and design firm Yabu Pushelberg, transformed the hotel into a symbol of opulence and sophistication.
The renovation encompassed all 181 guest rooms, reception, function rooms, food and beverage areas, and the world-famous spa. Refined finishes such as madrone Burl veneer, silver stained oak, various marbles, brushed brass, and fluted glass and acrylic panels were used throughout the hotel, exuding an air of elegance and luxury.
One of the most significant changes was the creation of two new-build contemporary Presidential Suites on the hotel's rooftop. To make way for these luxurious suites, the rooftop plant and satellite dishes were renewed and repositioned. The suites, which can be opened up as one Grand Suite, offer panoramic views over London and feature luxury bedrooms, bathrooms, lounge and dining spaces, private terraces, and serviced kitchens.
The hotel's exterior fabric was also refurbished and repaired, and extensive cleaning, repairs, and alterations to external lighting were made to improve the hotel's aesthetic. The existing windows were replaced, providing solar thermal acoustic glazing for energy efficiency and noise reduction.
Remarkably, the hotel remained open and operational throughout the renovation process. This feat was made possible by the project's division into two separate phases. The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel's restaurants, including Bar Boulud and Dinner, continued to serve guests during the renovation.
Feedback about the project has been positive, with the client expressing satisfaction with the work undertaken. The renovation has resulted in a high-quality design project, ensuring the hotel is recognized as one of the finest in the world. In recognition of this achievement, the renovation project has been shortlisted for a 2020 New London Award in the Conserving category.
The creation of the penthouse suites within an extra floor has also increased the hotel's luxury accommodation offerings. The Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel, with its blend of elegance, luxury, and world-class facilities, continues to be a premier destination for discerning travellers in London.
