Regions of Bremen and Bremerhaven are recognized as pioneers in promoting access to nutritious food for everyone.

Healthy eating for all thrives in Bremen and Bremerhaven, serving as leading examples.

In Bremen, the joint initiative known as "Gemeinsam Ernährungswende gestalten" (Shaping the Food Transition Together), or GEG, was launched on July 7, 2025. This project aims to transform eating habits in Bremen towards healthier, more sustainable, and more regional food consumption[1][3].

The project, initiated by the Kitchen Forum, brings together entities from science, business, politics, and civil society, with approximately 40 stakeholders participating[2]. The focus areas of the GEG project include increasing the share of organic food in out-of-home catering, reducing food waste, and strengthening regional value chains[4].

GEG's main goal is to encourage citizens to adopt diets that are both environmentally sustainable and beneficial to health. This is achieved through promoting awareness and educational efforts about nutrition's role in sustainability and health, supporting local and regional food systems, and facilitating cooperation among research, policy, and community groups[1][3].

The project ties in with the statewide nutrition strategy currently being developed and supports the implementation of the "Action Plan 2025 - Healthy Nutrition in Community Catering of the City of Bremen". The Bremen consortium project has received federal funds amounting to 1.25 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Homeland (BMEL)[5].

The kick-off event for the GEG project saw the symbolic handover of herb plants by Dr. Margareta Buening-Fesel, President of the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food, to the participants of the model region and Environment Senator Kathrin Moosdorf[6]. Dr. Buening-Fesel emphasized that the GEG model region project embodies commitment, cooperation, and innovative spirit[7].

The Kitchen Forum serves as the hub for sustainable nutrition in Bremen, and the GEG project aims to establish its first cooperation approaches following the presentation of participation options during the kick-off event[8]. Bremen can take a pioneering role in a health-promoting, sustainable, and inclusive nutritional transition with the GEG project, according to Dr. Buening-Fesel[1]. The project serves as a motivating example for other cities and communities.
