Greifswald Approves Major Green Space Expansion for 2026
Greifswald is set to enhance its green spaces with two significant projects approved by the Citizens' Assembly. The main committee has given the green light for the expansion of the circular path around the Ellernholzteich and the revival of the hiking trail between Eldena and Friedrichshagen. Construction tenders for both projects are expected in early 2026.
The circular path around the Ellernholzteich will undergo renovation and redesign to improve traffic flow for cyclists and pedestrians. The hiking trail, measuring approximately 2.6 km in length and 1 meter in width, will minimize interventions in nature. Senator of Construction Achim Lerm expressed that these projects fulfill a long-standing wish of the population, inviting them to enjoy nature and relaxation.
The hiking trail will include a wooden bridge, a small bridge, a bathing area, and a picnic area with a bird observation tower. The circular path will also be upgraded as a recreation area, featuring resting areas, barbecue areas, new benches, litter bins, and native wildflowers. Both projects are expected to start in spring 2026 and be completed by the end of the year, with a total cost of approximately 725,000 euros for the hiking trail alone. The funding authority, the KfW program 'Natural Climate Protection in Municipalities', will cover 90% of the costs.
Greifswald's expansion of the circular path around the Ellernholzteich and the revival of the hiking trail between Eldena and Friedrichshagen are set to transform the city's green spaces. These projects, expected to start in spring 2026, will provide residents and visitors alike with improved recreational facilities, promoting a connection with nature and relaxation.
