German Reality Stars Undergoing Burial-at-Sea Experiment

In an unprecedented experiment, six well-known personalities from the German online world have volunteered to be buried alive for 100 hours each, as part of the new reality series "What Remains - The Buried". The series premieres on May 4th on the streaming platform Joyn, with new episodes airing every Wednesday and Sunday.

The participants will endure five days alone in total darkness, without food, in a small wooden box buried underground. This extreme challenge is designed to push the boundaries of human endurance and explore the psychological and physiological effects of such conditions.

The psychological effects of this experience are expected to be severe. Participants may experience heightened anxiety, panic, and feelings of helplessness due to complete darkness and isolation, which disrupt normal sensory input and cognitive functioning. Heightened trauma responses or the emergence of past trauma symptoms are also likely, as total sensory deprivation can trigger suppressed emotions and psychological distress.

Physically, the lack of food and light in a confined space will result in physical weakness, dehydration, and metabolic slowdown. The absence of light cues will alter circadian rhythms and hormonal imbalances, impacting sleep-wake cycles and stress hormone levels. Increased cortisol and other stress hormones due to confinement and sensory deprivation can impair immune and cognitive function.

Despite these challenges, the participants will only have a ration of drinking water and a single personal item for comfort. A medical team will be on standby throughout the entire time to intervene immediately in case of any health issues.

The most prominent participant is entertainer Jens "Knossi" Knossalla (38), who describes the experience as "You can hear the sand falling on the box. Then you're alone - without light, without sounds. It's barely bearable, the thoughts that go through your head." Also joining is fitness influencer Sascha Huber (32), who states, "This time we've really taken it to the extreme. We wanted to find out where the personal limit lies."

"What Remains - The Buried" is an experiment that directly addresses a deeply rooted human fear: the idea of being buried alive. The series consists of 16 episodes and will be available for free on Joyn, as well as on the YouTube channels of Jens Knossalla and Sascha Huber starting May 14th, 2025. Other participants include "Fibii", Willi Whey, Lewinray, and Ronny Berger.

This reality series promises to be a gripping exploration of human resilience and the limits of endurance. Viewers are invited to witness the profound psychological and physiological effects of this extreme challenge and follow the participants' journeys as they confront their fears and push themselves to the brink.
