Furth im Wald Readies for Regal Garden Show amidst a Dragon's Tale
Verdant Water, Prominent Green Scenery, Dragons Displayed at the Annual State Horticultural Spectacle - Gardening event showcases water elements, extensive greenery, and a dragon figure at a nation's country garden exhibit
Get excited, folks! The State Garden Show in the Bavarian Forest is just around the corner, and it's shaping up to be a grand affair. The countdown's on, and Minister Thorsten Glauber (Free Voters) recently checked in on the preparations in Furth im Wald (Cham district). He declared it a fantastic showcase for the region. Over 11.3 million euros have been allocated for this spectacular event.
The 2025 State Garden Show promises to last a whopping 137 days, spanning from 22 May to 5 October. The opening ceremony will be graced by the presence of Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder (CSU), according to the town's announcement.
With the motto "A Magical Journey Awaits," the town aims to captivate visitors with enchanting garden and landscape architecture, a riot of floral splendor, a honey beehive, art, craft, and regional cuisine. The grounds will be adorned with around 2,600 shrubs, 240 trees, and nearly 150,000 perennials and bulbs. The show will also address issues related to climate change and drought. Approximately 3,000 events are planned.
One on-going theme woven through the State Garden Show is a stunning representation of the dragon from the historical play "Further Drachenstich." The flowers will bloom in a scale-like pattern, with a dragon's blood red bridge railing and a dragon's lair on display. Guided tours showcasing the festival's high-tech robot dragon will also be offered.
The "Drachenstich," an annual August event with a centuries-old tradition, is one of Germany's oldest folk plays. It is even recognized as an intangible cultural heritage since 2018.
Furth im Wald's Mayor, Sandro Bauer, considers the State Garden Show a significant enhance ment for the city, providing an opportunity to address urban planning shortcomings. The new, open park arena, where the old festival hall once stood, is also part of the urban planning revamp.
Initially, Bauer doubted the city's ability to pull off an event of this scale. Today, he beams with pride as the host. The show's themes also reflect the city's proximity to the Czech Republic. For instance, information boards will be bilingual.
The 11.3 million euros in funding for Furth im Wald, split between the state and EU, is the highest ever allocated for a State Garden Show, according to Glauber.
The next State Garden Show is set for 2027 in Bad Windsheim, while the jubilee edition is scheduled for Nuremberg in 2030.
