Fuengirola intensifies efforts in recycling competition
Fuengirola, a popular coastal town in Spain, has joined the sixth edition of Ecovidrio's Green Flags campaign, aiming to maintain its 'Green Flag' distinction for exceptional glass recycling and sustainability efforts. The campaign, launched at Rincon de Los Verdiales bar, will see Fuengirola compete against 181 coastal municipalities across Spain, with 50 of them being from Andalusia.
The Green Flags campaign is a nationwide initiative that recognises municipalities or sectors achieving high standards in glass recycling performance and environmental management. Participation in the campaign builds on the community effort that has earned Fuengirola the Green Flag in previous years.
Hugo Recio, Ecovidrio's representative for Eastern Andalusia, emphasised the campaign's focus on supporting towns with high summer tourism, such as Fuengirola. The data collected from this campaign will contribute to a national report on sustainable practices in the hospitality sector along Spain's coasts.
The campaign encourages bars, restaurants, and beachside chiringuitos to maximise glass recycling and adopt sustainable practices. Local businesses and residents are encouraged to participate. Ecovidrio's environmental educators will visit local establishments in Fuengirola to provide guidance on proper glass waste collection, separation, and recycling.
While the specific recycling and sustainability criteria for the Green Flags campaign in Fuengirola's glass recycling initiative for the hospitality sector are yet to be officially disclosed, general criteria usually include high rates of proper glass waste collection, engagement with local businesses, educational initiatives, reduction of contamination in recycling streams, and implementation of sustainable waste management practices.
For the hospitality sector, this often translates to training staff to separate glass bottles and containers correctly, using designated recycling bins, encouraging suppliers to use recyclable or recycled glass packaging, and participating in awareness campaigns promoted by local authorities and recycling bodies.
To obtain precise and specific criteria applied under the Green Flags campaign in Fuengirola, contacting the local municipality or Ecovidrio directly is advised. They can provide the official guidelines, targets, and sustainability protocols customised for hospitality businesses within the programme.
As the summer season approaches, Fuengirola's businesses are gearing up to promote the campaign through posters, social media, and Fuengirola Television, with the ultimate goal of winning the 'Green Flag' from Ecovidrio for the fourth year in a row.
The Green Flags campaign, an initiative recognizing exceptional glass recycling and sustainability practices, encourages local businesses in Fuengirola, such as bars, restaurants, and home-and-garden establishments, to adopt environmental-science-based sustainable lifestyles by maximizing glass recycling and minimizing waste contamination. Residents are also encouraged to get involved in this nationwide campaign, as Fuengirola aims to retain its 'Green Flag' distinction for the fourth consecutive year.
