Experience the rich history of the Bensberg ore district like never before with the annual Traditional Museum Festival at the Bergisches Museum für Bergbau, Handwerk und Gewerbe. This exciting event, taking place on Sunday, August 3, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., offers a diverse programme that promises to engage visitors of all ages.

The festival is meticulously organised by the museum's support association, who put in great effort to create a colourful and interactive experience. According to Willi Carl, chairman of the support association, the festival is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the fun and engaging way in which history can be conveyed.

Visitors can look forward to live demonstrations of traditional crafts such as baking in a historical oven, blacksmithing, spinning and weaving. These demonstrations aim to make regional craft traditions tangible and encourage interaction among people.

For the younger visitors, there will be a variety of interactive activities including making houses from clay and straw, crafting, face painting, and even herb salt making. The festival also offers guided tours of the visitor tunnel, providing an insight into the tools used for mining in the past, as well as special exhibitions that highlight the museum's collection.

The festival wouldn't be complete without regional delicacies. Refreshments available include coffee and cake, cold drinks, freshly baked bread, hearty and vegetarian food from the grill.

Museum director Sandra Brauer expresses her excitement about the festival and the new discoveries it holds for all generations. The festival has been running for over 40 years, with many volunteers involved each year.

One of the highlights of the festival is the operation of the 1907 locomotive and the hammer mill, which will be explained to visitors during the event.

The festival takes place on the museum grounds framed by historical half-timbered buildings opposite the Technical Town Hall. Admission costs 3 euros for adults, 1.50 euros reduced, and children under school age enter free.
