We all know the struggle of finding time to clean with a busy schedule. Work, kids, errands, and everyday responsibilities can make finding even an hour to clean seem impossible. The to-do list just keeps growing, and it's hard to find the motivation to tackle it.
While I strongly believe in having a weekly cleaning routine to keep your home tidy, I understand that everyone's situation is different. So, maybe adding another task to your already full schedule isn't ideal for you.
If that's the case, then setting aside time one day a week and doing a power hour cleaning might be just what you need to tackle that clutter and get your to-do list done!
Before you start, there are a few small daily tasks that you should incorporate into your routine. Although you don't have to, it will help you clean more efficiently during your power hour.
Quick Daily Tasks (10-15 minutes a day):
- Control the clutter- Do a quick pick-up after dinner (get the kids to help) or in the morning before you head out. You can put items in a basket to take care of later when it's more convenient.
- Wipe surfaces- Do a quick wipe of surfaces after breakfast and dinner in the kitchen. Also, spend a minute and wipe down your bathroom sink and toilet.
- Quick sweep- After dinner, do a quick sweep to get any crumbs off the floor.
- Dishes- Keep up with the dishes whenever possible.
By consistently sticking to these simple tasks every day, they will become habits that allow you to complete more jobs during your power hour, helping you breeze through that to-do list.

Or maybe you prefer to get all your cleaning done at once. You would rather pick one day and devote a chunk of time to complete many tasks at once.
In that case, following these Power Hour Cleaning Tips could be the solution for you:
Power Hour Cleaning Tips
Make a list
Start with a list of the tasks you want to accomplish during your power hour. Focus on the most important tasks for you.
Stay Motivated
Put on some music, an audiobook, or turn on a podcast to help you stay motivated and focused. Treat it as your exercise for the day!
Turn off distractions
Turn off your phone, find something to keep your kids busy for an hour so you won't be disturbed. Remember the goal is to complete as many tasks as you can!
Gather your supplies
Have a caddy of all the supplies that you will need for cleaning. This will help you clean more efficiently and quickly without constantly running back and forth to get supplies.
Some things I keep in my cleaning caddy:
- Disinfecting wipes
- Glass cleaner (I use vinegar most of the time)
- Microfiber cloths
- All-purpose spray
- Toilet cleaner
Set your timer
Set your timer for one hour, or ask Alexa to set it for you.
Start Cleaning
Collect clutter
Grab a basket and quickly start collecting any clutter that you have laying around. Go room to room putting the items in the basket to take care of later. Don't forget to delegate this task to the kids to help out!
(If you have been able to keep up with the clutter throughout the week, this should go quickly.)
Focus on one room at a time
Kitchen
Put dishes in the dishwasher or fill up your sink with soapy water to soak while you continue cleaning.
Wipe all counters, tables, and appliances down.
Bathroom
Spray down all surfaces including the toilet, clean mirrors, and wipe down the shower/bath.
Do a quick sweep and mop.
Family Room/Living Room/Bedrooms
Quick dust of surfaces, vacuum, and clean the windows.
If your hour isn't over yet, go back and wash the dishes that are in the sink or start putting away the clutter you collected at the beginning.
On busy weeks, when I'm not able to stick to my weekly cleaning routine (which has happened a lot over the summer), I do a Power Hour Cleaning every Saturday morning. I just make a list of all the tasks I wasn't able to complete throughout the week and try to tackle as many as I can in an hour.
If you find you are struggling to get everything done within the hour:
- Pick up the clutter first and focus on cleaning within the hour.
- Schedule another power hour cleaning on another day of the week.
Do you have extra time?
- Make it a double power hour to work on some decluttering tasks or deep cleaning.
By using a power hour cleaning routine, I've been able to keep on top of all my cleaning tasks even when I'm too busy to stick to a weekly cleaning routine. I hope these tips work for you too!
