In the picturesque town of Worms, Germany, preparations are underway for the construction of a new bike path along the Eisbach. The project, set to commence on September 1st, 2025, aims to make cycling more attractive and advance the mobility transition in the city.
Timo Horst, the city development spokesman for the SPD, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating that it will improve transportation options for both cyclists and pedestrians, making Worms a more sustainable and eco-friendly city.
The bike path, expected to be all-weather accessible and measuring up to three meters wide, will be paved and funded by 90% from federal funds under the special program "City and Countryside" by the Landesbetrieb Mobilität Rhineland-Palatinate (LBM).
However, the path's construction has been a long and arduous journey. Initial plans were set in motion a year ago, but extensive renegotiations were necessary due to the additional requirements set by the upper nature conservation authority. One of the requirements was to start the project only in the fall of 2025, after the breeding season, to minimise disturbance to local wildlife.
Numerous challenges had to be overcome during the construction of the bike path, including small curves, occasional narrowing of the path, and flexible adaptation of the base to protect tree roots. Careful handling of the trees along the path and the slope of the Eisbach was also crucial during construction.
A study by the city shows that the bike path renovation has a positive impact on the environment and climate, with the potential to save nearly 51 tons of CO2 per year by increasing bike traffic between specific locations. Pedestrians will also benefit from this bike path.
It's important to note that the new bridge over the Eisbach, recently installed, is not directly related to the bike path construction. The bike path will span four kilometers between Im Winkel and Wiesoppenheim.
