Dresden, renowned for its rich cultural heritage, is also home to over 300 fountains and water features, making it one of the most fountain-rich cities in Germany. These water attractions add a touch of charm to the city's landscape, and their operations typically commence in spring and continue until autumn, subject to weather conditions.

The Dresden city administration oversees the commissioning of these fountains and water features, with the season extending until October 31, 2024. However, specific commissioning dates for the 2024 season, including those for individual fountains, are not readily available. As we approach August 2025, it's safe to assume that the 2024 commissioning would have taken place last year, around spring 2024.

For detailed information about specific fountains and their commissioning dates, visitors are advised to consult the official Dresden city website or contact local tourist information centres. It's essential to stay informed to ensure a seamless visit and to enjoy the city's water features at their best.

While these fountains are designed to delight, it's important to note that they can pose a risk of injury. Components such as steel overflow edges, nozzles, and spotlights, as well as artistically designed elements, can potentially cause harm. As such, visitors are encouraged to exercise caution when exploring the city's water attractions.

Maintenance, inspections, and repairs for the fountains are carried out by specialists from the municipal operating company or commissioned specialist firms to ensure their safety and functionality. This meticulous care ensures that the fountains remain in top condition, providing visitors with an enjoyable experience.

One of the Kracht fountains on Neustaedter Market is currently undergoing extensive renovation work, with re-commissioning planned for 2025. Meanwhile, the other Kracht fountain on the same market is not operational due to renovation work.

The Artesian Fountain on Albertplatz in Neustadt has been displaying a clear water display since autumn 2023, after almost drying up last summer. This fountain, along with other drinking fountains located on Postplatz, Neumarkt, Wasaplatz (Strehlen), Alaunplatz (Neustadt), and Hermann-Seidel-Park (Striesen), have been in operation since Easter 2024. The water in the Artesian Fountain runs throughout the year, making it a constant source of refreshment for visitors.

It's important to note that Dresden's fountains and water features are not designed for bathing or wading, and the structural and hygienic conditions are not suitable for such activities. This is to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the water for all visitors.

Lastly, the Night Café season for the homeless in Dresden starts annually on November 1, with a different facility opening each evening. This initiative provides a warm and welcoming space for those in need during the colder months.

Visitors to Dresden can look forward to a delightful experience as they explore the city's fountains and water features, knowing that the water quality is regularly examined to meet the requirements of the drinking water ordinance. The city's commitment to maintaining these attractions ensures a continued source of enjoyment for all.
