Dive into the gripping tale of Christel Wolf, the undisputed matriarch of "United Metal Works Altena." Once on the brink of collapse following her husband's tragic suicide, this factory now churns out coin blanks for the Ministry of Finance, securing half the town's livelihood. Meanwhile, the hard-earned coins are minted by foreign laborers, led by Matteo Morabito.
Christel's relationships with her three daughters are far from picture-perfect. Ulla, a doctor in East Berlin, embraces socialism alongside her husband Tommy and daughter Angelika. Gundel, a struggling young mother, and Benno, a successful shoe store owner, endure a rocky marriage. Meanwhile, Margot, a personnel manager at the Wolf Works, and her rebellious 19-year-old son Winfried, known as "Winne," remain with Christel in the family villa.
Winne yearns for a life beyond Altena, coveting fast cars, popular music, and beautiful women. Dropping out of school and quitting his apprenticeship, Winne dreams of escaping town with his best friend Bijan. Christel, however, has other plans and forces Winne to work on the production line in the Wolf Works, alongside the foreign laborers under Matteo's tutelage – much to Margot's dismay.
Having endured a disastrous marriage with Nazi fugitive Böcker, who fled to Argentina 14 years prior, Margot relies on her mother for support in the small town. Christel's firm grip dominates Winne's upbringing, leading him to clash with his mother's wishes for him to serve in the army.
Abandoned by her traveling husband, Gundel tends to her newborn, while Winne broods in the youth club. As Christel sits alone at the bustling shooting festival, she's joined only by the mayor and builder Jürgen Vielhaber. Across from her sits an unexpected face – none other than Walter Böcker, Winne's stepfather and former Wolf Works partner, who's just escaped a military coup in Argentina.
By Böcker's side sits 20-year-old dressage rider Gabriela, who also fled Argentina. When Winne stumbles upon Gabriela in the small town, he finds a reason to stay put. Yet Böcker's homecoming to Altena is not without its ulterior motives. In an unexpected reunion, Winne faces his stepfather just as smoke billows from the Wolf Works.
