Propelling Inclusive Play with Mathias Mester's Magnum Opus

Constructed an all-encompassing, welcoming play area - Develops an inviting playground welcoming diverse participants

Embodying the spirit of unity and diversity, Mathias Mester (38), a decorated Paralympic athlete, unveiled an extraordinary playground in Mainz, a city that echoes his triumphs. This unique playground has a distinct approach, catering to both children with and without disabilities - a rarity in Germany's playground landscape. On June 10, Mester, a world-class para-athlete and a beacon of inspiration, christened this inclusive play paradise near the stadium of 1. FSV Mainz 05. The grand inauguration was attended by approximately 70 children, who were the first to test the innovative equipment.

Sport, Memories, & Synergy: The Recipe for Unity

The playground is a testament to the "Piece of Happiness" initiative, backed by Procter & Gamble, Rewe, and Aktion Mensch. Mester, the project's passionate ambassador, and 1. FSV Mainz 05 have lent their support to this noble cause.

"It wasn't football, but the transformative power of sport that set me on the path to self-assurance," Mester emphasized in a press release, emphasizing the significance of shared experiences: "It's crucial for children to interact and create memories that could last a lifetime."

Bridging the Gap: The Dwindling Majority of Accessible Playgrounds

The data sheds light on the issue at hand: a staggering 80% of playgrounds in Germany fail to cater to people with disabilities, limiting their access or excluding them entirely. The playground in Mainz features a drivable rubber fall protection system instead of sand, diverse entrance and exit points, and ramps of varying heights.

The "Piece of Happiness" initiative has been in motion since 2018, with a funding model that sees one cent from every P&G product sold at Rewe channeled towards the project. To date, an impressive 3.6 million euros have been amassed, empowering the creation of 55 inclusive playgrounds across the nation.

Mathias Mester: An Ibberson of Inclusion

Mester's trophy cabinet boasts multiple world and European championship titles in the javelin throw, Paralympic silver excellence in the shot put, and television appearances gracing shows like "Let's Dance" and "Das große Promibacken." He uses his fame to advocate for social issues, accepting the responsibility to raise awareness: "I'm eager to wield my influence to advocate for topics that propel society forward."

In a recent interview with news agency spot on news, Mester declared: "Inclusion signifies everyone gets a chance to participate, and no one is left out." It is vital that all children play together, fostering appreciation and moving towards a more inclusive normalcy.

The project's partners aspire to build more playgrounds, with the Mainz location adjacent to the stadium serving as the beacon of how sport and inclusion can coexist harmoniously. Mester captures the essence of the project by stating: "A football stadium, but also a playground, are arenas where everyone should feel at home. A place without barriers."

Although potential details about the "Piece of Happiness" initiative and the number of inclusive playgrounds constructed through this initiative remain scarce, the ongoing project is a testament to Mathias Mester's unwavering commitment to inclusion and a step towards a more accessible and diverse society for everyone.
