"CPI(M) MP Brittas advocates for upgrading Indo-China ties following Modi and Xi Jinping's meeting"
India and China Agree to Enhance Bilateral Ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to engage in summit-level discussions, marking a significant step towards strengthening the relationship between the two nations. The decision was made during a meeting at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders recognised the role of India and China's economies in stabilising global trade. They agreed to expand common ground on bilateral, regional, and global issues and challenges, such as terrorism and fair trade, in multilateral platforms.
The leaders also agreed on enhancing "people-to-people" ties through direct flights, visa facilitation, and the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra. This move is expected to foster regional security and ensure economic cooperation.
PM Modi invited Xi Jinping to the BRICS Summit that India will host in 2026. President Xi thanked PM Modi for the invitation and offered China's support to India's BRICS Presidency.
During the meeting, PM Modi shared his vision for bilateral relations with Cai Qi, a Member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China. Cai Qi expressed a desire to promote the healthy development of bilateral relations between China and India.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP John Brittas welcomed the bilateral meeting between the two leaders. He stated that the Indo-China relationship should be taken "to another level."
PM Modi emphasised that India and China should not be viewed through a third-country lens, as both nations pursue strategic autonomy. He also noted the need to strengthen people-to-people ties and to proceed from a political and strategic direction to expand bilateral trade and investment ties and reduce the trade deficit.
Both leaders welcomed the positive momentum and steady progress in bilateral relations since their last meeting in Kazan in October 2024. Cai reiterated the Chinese side's desire to expand bilateral exchanges and further improve relations in line with the consensus reached between the two leaders.
The improved rapport between India and China is expected to have far-reaching implications for regional security and economic cooperation. As the two nations continue to engage in discussions, the world watches with anticipation.
