Dinslaken Train Station Set for Modern Renovation Blending Heritage and Contemporary Design

Dinslaken Train Station is set for a modern renovation, aiming to create a contemporary, functional, and urbanistically convincing station that meets both traffic requirements and citizen expectations. The project, which is progressing in close cooperation with the state, the railway company, the architectural firm, the administration, and the city society, is expected to be available in early summer 2026.

The renovation plans, which focus on combining heritage elements with modern infrastructure and passenger amenities, have been approved by the BEG. The Aachen architectural firm, Praglowski Architekten, has been commissioned by the Bahn Area Development Company for the renovation and aesthetic enhancement of the station.

Since taking office, Mayor Michaela Eisloeffel, together with Bundestag member and former Mayor Sabine Weiss, state parliamentarian Stefan Zimkeit, and city administration employees, have been working to improve the situation at the train station. The mayor had already signed a declaration of intent for the project at the beginning of 2023.

The modernization projects typically include new weather protection and seating on platforms, improved guidance systems including for the visually impaired, contemporary signage that is attractive and accessible, collaborative improvements to station forecourts for better multimodal connections, and the incorporation of regional design elements acting as identity markers.

Deutsche Bahn's 2025 North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) station upgrades emphasize heritage integration with modern design and comfort. Similar treatment may be forthcoming for Dinslaken, given that the city lies in NRW where such initiatives are occurring.

The funding conference involving MHKBD, the Düsseldorf Regional Government, and VRR agreed upon the concept as the basis for further steps. Financial support has been laid through the "Welcome to NRW" program of the Ministry for Home Affairs, Communities, Building and Digitalization (MHKBD) of the state of NRW and DB InfraGO, provided that the city's approved financial equalization concept is available.

The costs of the first planning phase, including design planning, are borne by the urban development funding of the state of NRW and DB InfraGO, each contributing 50 percent. No costs are incurred by the City of Dinslaken in the current planning phase.

A joint on-site meeting was held on July 24th between the city's development department, Deutsche Bahn, BEG/NRW.urban, and the architectural firm "Praglowski Architekten" from Aachen. Important steps were taken last year to submit a corresponding funding application for the renovation project.

The project is supported by the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Transport of the state of NRW and the Düsseldorf Regional Government. The design planning, which will serve as the basis for further financing and funding discussions, is expected to be available in early summer 2026.
