Conflict at K20/21 Düsseldorf exhibit: Chagall and the avant-garde exploration of LGBTQ+ themes
The Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf, Germany, is gearing up for an exciting journey through the world of art from September 2023 to February 2026. Here's a glimpse of the captivating exhibitions that await visitors.
From September 2023 to mid-March, the K20 will be dedicated to "Queer Modernism," in cooperation with the Wiener Albertina. Yoko Ono, the renowned artist and peace activist, is presenting a solo exhibition at the K20, featuring films, documents, photographs, and installations that delve into her innovative and thought-provoking work.
Meanwhile, the K21 is making space for Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger, a lesser-known heroine, from February 22nd to August 31st. Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger, a painter, psychoanalyst, philosopher, and peace activist, is the focus of this exhibition. The politically charged paintings and drawings of Bracha Lichtenberg Ettinger will be on display, offering a unique perspective on modern art.
Susanne Gaensheimer, the director of Kunstsammlung NRW, is applauded by experts and placed at number 18 on Monopol's list of the 100 most important personalities in the art world. Gaensheimer considers Julie Mehretu, the 1970-born, Ethiopian-American artist, to be one of the "most influential painters of the present." Julie Mehretu's rather abstract-expressive work will be on display at the K21 from May 10th to October 12th. Upon closer inspection, figurative details, architectures, overlays, and overlays between the free lines can be recognized in Julie Mehretu's work.
The K21 will close the season with an ecologically-charged exhibition on "Land and Soil." Around 20 artists and collectives will explore themes of resource waste and property distribution through their installations in this exhibition.
In the meantime, the Kunsthalle will present itself as a "nomadic art hall" with many small exhibitions across all city districts, until the Kunsthalle closes for two years from 2026 for a future-proof makeover.
The Kunsthalle is not wheelchair-accessible, highlighting the need for improvements to ensure inclusivity in the art world.
A Chagall exhibition is scheduled at K20 from March 15th to August 10th, while the Düsseldorf Artists' Association (VdDK) is announcing an exhibition titled "We're just getting started" from March 15 to May 25, after Sheila Hicks' woolly objects exhibition.
After the Kunsthalle's renovation, art enthusiasts can look forward to more captivating exhibitions that promise to enrich and inspire.
