City of Neuwied backs integration initiative
In the city of Neuwied, a significant initiative is underway to foster community cohesion and promote the social and professional integration of third-country nationals. The project, aptly named "Strong Neighbors," is a collaboration between EIRENE and Diakonie.
Ali Al Nasani, CEO of EIRENE, and Iyad Asfour, the project leader, are spearheading this endeavour. The project aims to offer workshops on non-violent conflict resolution, train language and conflict mediators, and mediate volunteer work and internships.
Mayor Peter Jung has expressed his support for the project, stating that the commitment of EIRENE and Diakonie makes a significant contribution to peaceful and integrative coexistence in Neuwied. The city has approved a grant of 25,000 euros for the project, with the funds to be paid out from July 2025 to December 2027.
The project is open to people with and without a refugee background, reflecting its inclusive nature. Since its inception in 2017, the project has trained numerous volunteers who contribute significantly to Neuwied's cohesion.
The next phase of the project will include a structured program for internships and voluntary services. The project will also integrate ecological topics to promote climate protection awareness, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.
The project's future priorities were outlined to the Social Committee members by Al Nasani and Asfour. These include further developing professional integration support and increasing personnel capacities in the area of consulting work, thanks to the city's support.
With the expansion of project measures and the support of the Social Committee, the successful model will be further developed. The project will provide individual consultations for third-country nationals, ensuring personalised support for those in need.
The city of Neuwied's support for the Strong Neighbors project is a testament to its commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for all residents. The project is expected to make a positive impact on the community, promoting social harmony and ecological awareness.
In the next phase, the Strong Neighbors project will integrate a structured program for sustainability-focused internships and voluntary services, underlining its commitment to sustainable living. This home-and-garden friendly initiative will also offer workshops and resources aimed at promoting lifestyle choices that are beneficial for the environment, aligning with the principles of sustainable living.
