Renowned churches in the city center, such as the Paulskirche, Katharinenkirche, and Old Nikolaikirche on the Römerberg, will participate, along with the Imperial Cathedral's impressive 9 bells, including the city's heaviest and most famous bell, the Gloriosa.
A Revamped Experience
Staying true to tradition, the Grand City Carillon will be played on the eve of Pentecost. But this year, things are different! You'll be hearing an entirely new composition created by the talented members of the Ensemble Modern, based in Frankfurt. It's said to promise a more immersive listening experience!
Composed by the Ensemble Modern and titled "supra urbem" (meaning "above the city" in Latin), this fresh take on the carillon will now be played every Saturday before Pentecost.
On other holidays such as Christmas and Easter, the city center will still echo the traditional version of the Grand City Carillon, dating back to the work of Mainz bell expert Paul Smets from 1954.
This Saturday, starting at 4:30 PM, the bells will begin to play one by one, from the highest to the lowest tones, gradually forming the familiar, harmonious grand sound.
The Grand City Carillon first began on these holidays in 1856. The title "Grand City Carillon" was later added. Be a part of this grand tradition in the city of Frankfurt am Main.
