Budapest's Iconic Gellért Baths to Close for Major Renovations Until 2028

Budapest's iconic Gellért Baths, a beloved thermal spa, is set to close for extensive renovations until 2028. The city is investing €51 million in the project to preserve its historical features and improve energy efficiency.

The baths, designed by Hungarian architects Ármin Hegedűs, Artúr Sebestyén, and Izidor Sterk, have been attracting 1,500-1,800 visitors daily since their last major renovation in the 1980s. However, continuous exposure to thermal water, steam, and cleaning chemicals has led to deterioration, making the renovations necessary.

The comprehensive renovations will protect and renew the site's historical Art Nouveau features. Visitors can expect improved energy efficiency upon reopening in 2028. In the meantime, they can enjoy other thermal spas in Budapest.

Advance booking is recommended for other spas, as Gellért's usual visitors may be redirected elsewhere during the closure. The adjacent Gellért Hotel is also undergoing renovations since November 2021, with a new wellness area and panoramic sauna planned.

The Gellért Baths, a masterpiece of early 20-century architecture, will close for large-scale renovations until 2028. The €51 million project aims to preserve its historical features and improve energy efficiency, ensuring its continued enjoyment for future generations of visitors.
