Bicycle Encounters in Düsseldorf: Journeying through Station Missions and Democracy Workshops
In the heart of Düsseldorf, a unique initiative has taken root, aiming to foster peace, community, and dialogue. The "Bicycle for Blessing and Democracy" made its debut on Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz on February 24.
This mobile meeting place, converted by Dirk Schmidt and his team, is more than just a bicycle. It's a symbol of unity and a platform for discussions, equipped with seating, storage, and even holders for refreshments.
The inauguration of the bike was marked by a blessing from Protestant pastor Peter Krogull and Catholic deacon Luis Aquino. The project, a collaboration between the Rail Mission and the association Arbeit und Leben, was made possible with the support of the Deutsche Bahn Foundation.
Barbara Kempnich, who spearheads the Rail Mission, sees the bike's inauguration on the anniversary of the war in Ukraine as a significant sign. The bike's mission is to bring people of all religions together, fostering conversations and promoting understanding.
The bike will embark on two tours this season, on March 24 and April 21, both from 2 to 4 pm at Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz. Volunteer helpers are needed for the bike's weekly meetings. Interested parties can contact Barbara Kempnich at 0211 36 28 28 or [email protected].
Kempnich hopes that the Zukunftswerkstatt will soon provide a permanent home for the blue speedster in their bike station. The Rail Mission has a rich history of projects in the station area, focusing on public space design and citizen coexistence.
As the summer approaches, the goal is to invite people to meet at the bike weekly, fostering a sense of community and encouraging dialogue. If you're in Düsseldorf on the designated dates, be sure to drop by and be a part of this unique initiative.
This unique initiative, located in the heart of Düsseldorf, not only promotes peace and dialogue but also extends to lifestyle matters, with the converted bicycle serving as a home-and-garden for conversations and community gatherings. Conversations surrounding the bike, and its mission to bring people together, will especially be held during their home-and-garden tours on March 24 and April 21, from 2 to 4 pm at Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz. If you're in Düsseldorf on these dates, consider stopping by to contribute to this lifestyle-focused, home-and-garden initiative.
