Artist Andris Braeuer's "In Transit" Series Captures Fleeting Moments of Human Connection in Berlin's Public Transit

Photographer Andris Braeuer's "In Transit" series invites viewers to pause and contemplate the lives and stories of Berliners on the move, specifically within the context of the S-Bahn. This project, photographed during the gloomy winter months of last year, focuses on fleeting interactions and transient moments between strangers[1].

The inspiration for "In Transit" came from watching people board trams in Ostkreuz, reminiscent of John Schabel's "Passengers" series. While no explicit connection is stated between the two projects, both series share a conceptual affinity in documenting transient human experiences in public transit contexts[1].

"In Transit" does not specify a particular emotion, but aims to capture a quiet moment and leave it as it is. The success of each photograph depends on the right moment, as people might react differently when they notice Braeuer taking their picture, such as giving a weird face, shying away, or continuing to look at him. The series aims to evoke feelings of loneliness and turn them into empathy.

The project was challenging due to the limited time available for each photograph. The photographs focus on capturing the actions and states of people in transit, rather than their thoughts. The series reflects Braeuer's personal relationship with Berlin, particularly during winter months.

In addition to "In Transit," Braeuer has a separate photo series shot in Vietnam that will be featured in Frayme magazine. His work will be exhibited at The Quagmire from August 22 to 24 at Culterim Studios. In September, Braeuer will exhibit at the Glasgow Gallery of Photography.

Braeuer relocated to Berlin in 2023 and can be followed on Instagram for updates at @andybraeuer. His work, much like the film Wings of Desire by Wim Wenders, offers a unique and intimate glimpse into the lives of everyday commuters, inviting viewers to reflect on their own fleeting encounters.
