Baden-Württemberg Enhances School Safety with 'School Streets' and 'School Zones'

Baden-Württemberg's Ministry of Transport has introduced a new decree to enhance school safety. The measure aims to reduce traffic hazards near schools by implementing 'safe streets' and 'safe zones'.

The decree provides clear legal foundations for municipalities to introduce these measures easily and securely. It outlines signage requirements, street suitability, and cooperation between local authorities, traffic departments, and schools.

Safe streets temporarily close specific road sections to motorized traffic during school hours, while safe zones permanently restrict vehicle traffic. Both initiatives encourage walking, cycling, or scooting to school, reducing the need for 'parent taxis' and related dangers.

The Ministry also offers a MOVERS consulting service and information materials to aid local implementation. Additionally, municipalities can set up pick-up and drop-off zones to complement these safety measures.

The cross-departmental MOVERS - Active to School program supports children and parents in safely navigating school routes. It includes school route plans, cycling proficiency badges, and the MOVERS toolkit 'Visible School Routes'.

The new decree and supporting measures aim to create safer school journeys for children. By promoting walking and cycling, these initiatives reduce traffic congestion and enhance school safety across Baden-Württemberg.
