Audiobook enthusiasts on Spotify can now enjoy expanded subscription options
Spotify, the popular music streaming service, has announced its latest plan for expanding its audiobook services in the US. The new offering, called Audiobooks , is a monthly add-on for Premium subscribers that provides an additional 15 hours of audiobook listening per month and extends access to household members on Family and Duo plans for the first time in the US.
The Audiobooks+ plan builds on Spotify's initial audiobook rollout in 2022, which sold titles individually. This new subscription-based approach is tailored to audiobook fans, especially those who consume longer content.
The expansion follows similar launches in markets like Ireland, Canada, the UK, Australia, and parts of Europe. Spotify aims to diversify revenue streams amid pressures from rising costs and a weaker advertising business while leveraging strong user growth. Active users have reached nearly 700 million, and paid subscribers are over 270 million.
The addition of audiobook access for all family members is designed to increase retention and enhance subscriber value. Tapping into a fast-growing global audiobook market, listening hours have increased over 35% year-over-year in major markets, including the US.
Audiobooks+ for Plan Members allows additional members on Premium Family and Duo plans to access 15 hours of monthly audiobook listening. Plan members can also purchase a one-time 10-hour top-up if they run out of hours before their monthly billing cycle refreshes.
It's worth noting that Spotify acquired Findaway, one of the world's largest audiobook distributors, in 2022. As a result, Spotify now has thousands of audiobooks in its catalogue.
Michael Kozlowski, who has been writing about audiobooks, e-books, and e-readers for the past eighteen years, resides in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. However, he is not mentioned as being affiliated with Spotify or Findaway in this context.
